P4000: AI-Driven NPC Behavior Research (Unreal Engine)

🚀 I’m excited to share  "P4000: AI-Driven NPC Behavior Research"

I’m thrilled to announce P4000, a research-driven Unreal Engine project exploring how players perceive and interact with NPCs exhibiting different competencies and behaviors in a harsh sci‑fi world set on Earth in the year 4000.

🌍 Setting
Earth, circa 4000: environmental degradation has transformed the planet into deserts and dust-choked plains. Superheated air crackles with lightning, the sun looms large, and alien kraken-like entities challenge humanity’s last survivors. This world serves as a testbed to study how AI behaviors influence player experience.

🎮 Core Features

  • Diverse NPC Archetypes: From fast, aggressive hunters to slow, aloof drifters, including passive NPCs that ignore the player entirely, allowing us to study perception across competency levels.

  • Handcrafted Environments: High-quality materials and dynamic effects (dust, storms, lightning) create a visually rich, hostile atmosphere.

  • Advanced AI Systems: Behavior Trees, Blackboards, AI Perception, and NavMesh pathfinding deliver modular, explainable NPC decision-making.

  • Fluid Animation: Blend Spaces and State Machines ensure smooth, readable NPC motion.

🧠 Research Design

  • Study player interpretation of NPC competencies and responses in the same world context.

  • Measure perceived challenge, immersion, and trust in AI through pre- and post-play questionnaires.

  • All data is anonymous; no personal information is collected.
